The district to define the decade.

In each decade, one London area goes down in the history books and defines the period more than any other. Clerkenwell has been elevated into a prime urban residential district.

There are trendy pubs and restaurants on every corner. There is St John's used as the meeting place for the London art scene, the sophisticated Maison Novelli, Saints, Vic Naylors, the Hogarthian Jerusalem Tavern, Café Lazeez, One of Two, East One and Smith's of Smithfield.

The media are well represented in the area, as well as designers, architects, new media and Internet companies.

The real change in this area has been brought about by the growing residential population and the variety of buildings people are occupying. Purchasers coming into the area expect interesting spaces and quality fit-outs and are rarely disappointed.

The take-over of industrial buildings in Clerkenwell , EC1 , Smithfield and Old Street began with artists and photographers flocking east in search of cheap work space in the 1980's.

In the 1980's when the City boomed, it was presumed that offices would spill into Clerkenwell, and Smithfield would be turned into a Covent Garden style commercial development. That has not happened and for the moment at least, the meat market is staying put. Thus, the hopes that the developers once pinned on offices were transferred to residential schemes. Since the pioneering Summer's Street Loft Building was launched in 1992 by the Manhattan Loft Corporation there has been a succession of imaginative residential developments. Hurford Salvi Carr have played a pioneering role, selling over 1,000 new apartments, flats and new homes in Clerkenwell since 1996.

In October 1996 the American magazine Newsweek, hailed London as the culture capital of the world and cited Clerkenwell as Central London's hippest address. Fuelled by an enthusiastic property press, buyers flock into the area, and there are now an estimated 4000 new residents occupying an array of luxury apartments and lofts.
